Sun Space is a very unique art space in Shadow Hills, California, just north of LA. Noell, the owner is as cool as they come, and super welcoming and open-minded. Brad Dutz (one of LA’s top percussionists, and uber-musicians) curates a performance series there every Thursday. Despite the venue’s modest size, the Thursday night series boasts an impressive line-up. I’ll be there from 8-9 with my 4tet, featuring John Tegmeyer on clarinet, Cooper Appelt on bass, and James Yoshizawa on drums. At 9, I’ll turn the stage over to an incredibly talented group of young musicians from Cal State Northridge, with whom I had the great pleasure of working this past semester. They will also play an entire set of original music which will blow your mind.

I’ve really been enjoying performing my material (which lately has been written with a 9-piece band in mind) with my 4tet which includes John Tegmeyer on clarinet, Cooper Appelt on bass, and James Yoshizawa on drums. These three are also permanent fixtures in my larger ensemble, and the intimate relationship they have with my compositions makes for a musical experience which, for me, is transcendent. Audiences don’t seem to complain much either.

The Collective is on it’s second album, “Reverence”. All the same personnel as the first; a rare find in our current artistic climate. I’m proud of the work we’ve done as a band and how far we've come in terms of developing a real sound that is unique, diverse, and personal. This same night, I’ll be debuting my Brazilian Choro Project. Think of it as the melodic and harmonic language of Western European counterpoint accompanied by Brazilian Samba rhythms and instrumentation. It’s gonna be a huge night. Saturday, 09/07/19 5pm-9pm Performances a la Carte begins it’s Fall 2019 Jazz ‘n Paz concert series with a Rhythm/Brews/BBQ fundraiser in Pasadena. My Unit B organ trio group will be there featuring Ty Bailie on Hammond B3 organ and Tina Raymond on drums. We’ll be performing music from our release “The Long Game” and will have the honor of providing the accompaniment for vocalist Carla Jamie Perez and the great, legendary vocalist Barbara Morrison. I’m always excited when I’m asked to play this venue. It’s a great sounding, intimate room, with perfectly appointed mid-century modern decor, and an emphasis on listening.
